Nilüfer Dry Cow Feed
Heifer & Dry Cow Feed
Net: 50kg
A pregnant cow is dried off (milk production stopped) about 2 months before calving. The calf in the womb completes two-thirds of its total growth during the last 3 months of pregnancy. During this period, the cow’s udder tissue rests. The dry cow should be fed in a way that meets her needs without causing fattening. The cow’s live weight and body condition should be adjusted 1–2 months before entering the dry period. The ideal body condition score (BCS) for cows in the dry period is between 3.25 and 3.75. Proper dry period nutrition ensures easy calving and prevents postpartum metabolic diseases. It also helps achieve and maintain high milk yield after calving, in line with the cow’s genetic potential. The 8-week dry period should be divided into two stages: the first 5 weeks and the last 3 weeks. During the first 5 weeks, legume-based roughages such as alfalfa, vetch, and clover (hay or silage) should not be given in excess. Corn silage should not exceed 5–6 kg during this stage. The use of concentrated feeds and grains should also be carefully controlled. Cows must have free access to clean, fresh drinking-quality water 24 hours a day. They should be housed in well-ventilated barns with clean, dry bedding.
Usage
If high-quality roughage is included in the ration (not exceeding 30% of the total roughage), provide 2.0–2.5 kg per day. If only straw or poor-quality roughage is used, provide 3–5 kg per day. It is highly beneficial to keep straw freely available in front of dry cows at all times. During the first stage of the dry period (first 35–40 days), cows have a strong appetite. Care should be taken to avoid excessive feed intake during this stage. For proper dry period feeding, please consult our regional managers for technical support.
